MONTEREY POP FESTIVAL: Summer of Love
"Bedecked with beads, boots, faded Levi's, stovepipe hats, bells and tambourines, 200,000 members of the turned-on generation celebrated the rites of life, liberty and the pursuit of hippiness."
- TIME Magazine 1967
Officially dubbed THE FIRST ANNUAL MONTEREY INTERNATIONAL POP MUSIC FESTIVAL, this historic event provided a long weekend filled with unique and amazing sights, sounds and experiences. Two years before Woodstock, over 200,000 young people gathered in and around the Monterey County Fairgrounds for a three day celebration of Music, Peace and Love.
This was the event that made Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Otis Redding, The Who and Ravi Shankar household names. “In all, with the high incidence of musical quality and the low incidence of violence and lawbreaking, it was a festival to make everybody happy,” TIME remarked over a half-century ago.
Consider the line-up for this ground-breaking festival... Janis Joplin with Big Brother & The Holding Company… The Jimi Hendrix Experience… The Jefferson Airplane… The Who… Otis Redding… Simon & Garfunkel… The Byrds… The Mamas & The Papas… Grateful Dead… Eric Burdon & The Animals… Buffalo Springfield… Canned Heat... Laura Nyro... Hugh Masakela... The Paul Butterfield Blues Band... The Steve Miller Band... Booker T & The M.G.s and more... surely one of the hottest collections of musicians ever gathered to perform on one stage at one event.
Now, over 50 years later, an amazing group of Australian musicians gather to bring the original show back to life. This show was created by Damien Lovelock - former frontman of classic Surf Punk Rock band, The Celibate Rifles. Damien was set to perform Monterey at Eastern Lounge, but sadly passed away on Saturday August 3. At Damien's request, his bandmates carry on and will perform the show for us in tribute to him. It will be a very special night.
Those band members include Amanda Easton-Morel (Glenn Shorrock, Powderfinger, Marcia Hines), Rex Goh (Eurogliders, Air Supply, Glenn Cardier & The Sideshow), Tim Wedde, Floyd Vincent, Dave Molland and Lloyd Gyi ... and Glen Whitehall (The Voice) has been brought in to sing those songs previously performed by Damien. That's one red hot line-up to perform songs like Joplin's 'Ball & Chain' and 'Piece of My Heart', The Who's 'Magic Bus' and 'Substitute', Jefferson Airplane's 'White Rabbit' and 'Somebody to Love'... and of course Eric Burdon's 'Monterey' itself... absolute classics that are rarely heard played live in any Sydney venue.
